Pitchman-A-Go-Go #1

Welcome to Pitchman-A-Go-Go. Each Thursday I grab a comic, scan an ad and then wish we had shelled out the money, cut out the coupon and sent away for the wonders that awaited us.

This week- Tank Trap/Cannon Ball (1972). This is a great double ad that was for GAMES! Not just plastic figures, you got an actual games with actual EXPLODING pieces (either tanks or bridges depending on the game). Heck, even the word 'exploding' was exploding, so this must really really explode. Both games were shipped in 'handsome simulated book form' and the CannonBall game came with a 3 sq ft plastic play mat (so it was 1.5 ft by 1.5 ft. WOW!)

You could even order extra exploding pieces or even get 64 Cowboys and Indians on the Warpath. How could you NOT order this?

You have to love an ad that has Nazis and Confederates in it. There's so much action on this page it looks like the love child of Sgt. Rock & Jonah Hex.

  1. I ordered 2 similar sets. One was for army men and warships in a little locker shaped box the army men were shooting out into the sea at ships (ludicrous scene except to a 6-7yr old😆)The pieces were as thin as a dime (maybe thinner?🤔)
The second? It was for HO scale revolutionary war army men. Red and blue soldiers w/no love for any particular details (like the ones I collected from Airfix at the time) just blobs. Rinkie dink cannons thar looked like a 10 yr old constructed them.
    Blah!

The ads were 100times better than the product, of course if the products were any good they would have just shown them 🤔

I DO like this feature though.

Also Your.site had been helpful for a new (old) Hex fan who had to scoop up all of his childhood comics before Mom and Dad moved to snowbirds land for retirement (or lose them to a yard sale). I then made the mistake of rereading them and have several that were continued w/out the next comic.
My 1st Hex was Weird Western Tales #37

What a horrid way to end the 70-80s J.H. comic by the way. By the end I was a mail order customer (just Hex and Amaz.Spiderman) I thought the last couple dozen stories flowed nicely from one to the next and i.was seriously pissed off they "vaporized" Jonah and tried to turn him into Mad Max. I bought the 1st HEX out of curiosity then that was it, they lost a lifelong fan.

Thanks for the site ya skunk 👍🏻👍🏻

  2. C.Mike,

Thanks for the kind words. Sorry for the lag on approving your comments. I'll be posting more this month.

A always wanted to buy these 'games' but my mom always said they were junk. Mom was a wise woman.
